Origin and history

The town hall of Château-Thierry was built between 1891 and 1894 according to the plans of architect Jean Bréasson, in a neo-Renaissance style characteristic of the late nineteenth century. Inaugurated on 15 March 1893 by Raymond Poincaré, then Minister of Public Instruction, he replaced an old building shared between the municipal and judicial authorities. This monument, having survived the destructions of the two world wars, symbolizes the urban modernization of the time.

The façade of the town hall features four medallions carved by Gustave Germain, representing women's allegories (Law, Justice, Force, Law). Inside, the ceiling of the wedding hall is decorated with three panels painted by Jean-Eugène Buland. The monumental staircase, the vestibule and some rooms (including the wedding salon) are classified, as are facades and roofs, which have been protected since 2005 as historical monuments.

Located in the Place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville, the building dominates a lively urban area, close to the cinema-theatre, the covered market and the stairs leading to the old castle. The entrance hall displays the engine of the Quentin Roosevelt aircraft, adding a memorial dimension linked to local aviation history. The ensemble illustrates the cultural and political importance of Château-Thierry at the Belle Époque.
