Origin and history

The city hall of Dambach-la-Ville, erected in the first half of the 16th century, embodies Renaissance civil architecture in Alsace. The current building, dated 1547 by two inscriptions, includes an adjacent tower of 1537 housing the municipal prison. This tower, initially crowned with a Gothic guardrail and an arrow, was modified in 1848 by architect Antoine Ringeisen, who added a pole and a new north entrance.

The basement retains cradle vaults, while the old prison has ridge vaults. Ranked Historic Monument in 1930 (facades and roofs), the building belongs to the commune. Its central location, 11 Place du Marché, reflects its historical role in local governance and commercial activities of Dambach-la-Ville, medieval village of Bas-Rhin (Great East).

The transformations of the 19th century (deletion of the Gothic arrow, interior redevelopment) illustrate the evolution of administrative and aesthetic needs. Today, the building remains a symbol of the Alsatian heritage, mixing late Gothic heritage and Renaissance influences, typical of the prosperous cities of the region at that time.
