Origin and history

The town hall of La Rochelle, which has been in operation since 1298, is the oldest in France still in office. Originally installed in five houses and an orchard, it was rebuilt from 1486 after a fire, with a wall of Gothic enclosure flamboyant symbolizing the prosperity and independence of the city. Between 1628 and 1748 he served as a residence for the Governor of l'Aunis before returning to town hall. Ranked a historic monument in 1861, it underwent major restoration at the end of the 19th century, mixing reconstruction and extensions.

La Rochelle, freed from feudal guardianship by Guillaume X of Aquitaine, became a free and prosperous port thanks to trade with England and Northern Europe. In 1199 Alienor d'Aquitaine issued a communal charter granting broad autonomy, including the management of public funds, justice, and military defence. The Vauclair Castle, symbol of royal power, was destroyed in 1372 after the French reconquest, marking the end of the direct feudal authority over the city.

The current building is the result of several construction phases: the North Pavilion (16th century), the large gallery (1595-1606), and the honorary staircase, rebuilt in the 19th century. A fire in 2013 ravaged roofs and structures, requiring restoration completed in 2019. The interior, redesigned in the 19th century, houses halls such as the large festive hall and the cabinet of Jean Guiton, emblematic mayor during the siege of 1628.

The enclosure wall, with crenellated towers and gargoyles, surrounds a Renaissance-style interior courtyard. The facade combines Gothic and Renaissance elements, with allegorical statues (Prudence, Justice) and coats of arms. The belfry tower, added in 1878, dominates the whole, while the stele of Léonce Vieljeux recalls the resistance during the Second World War.

Ranked a historic monument since 1861, the town hall embodies the Rockese identity, mixing medieval heritage, communal autonomy and modern restorations. Its stones, damaged by salt and pollution, have been the subject of conservation campaigns. Today, it remains a symbol of La Rochelle's resilience and maritime history.
