Origin and history
Mouthe city hall, located in the Doubs department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, was designed in 1846 by the bisontin architect Pierre Marnotte. The original plans included a multi-purpose building housing a town hall, schools with boarding schools, infirmary and justice of the peace, in accordance with the 1833 law requiring municipalities to provide these services. The construction, begun after 1847, was completed after 1850, reflecting a desire for administrative and educational centralization.
The architecture of the building is inspired by Renaissance codes, with a cubic structure surmounted by a pyramidal roof and four pepper turrets. The entrance right in the hanger and the baluster balcony underline its imposing character. Inside, the stairwell and the former court room, inscribed in historic monuments in 1990, testify to its past judicial use. The building thus embodies the alliance between public functionality and architectural ambition.
Ranked a historic monument for its facades, roofs and interior elements, Mouthe City Hall illustrates the evolution of municipal buildings in the 19th century. His architect, Pierre Marnotte, marked the project with atypical stylistic choices for the time, avoiding neo-classicism or neo-gothicism. Today, there remains a symbol of the communal heritage and the administrative history of Franche-Comté.
