Origin and history
The town hall of Nant was originally a private hotel built between 1762 and 1765 in the department of Aveyron, Occitanie. Commanded by Ayrolle des Angles, master of cavalry camp during the reign of Louis XV, its construction was entrusted to architect Viguier. The building is distinguished by a seven-span façade, a forebody decorated with stereotomy, and a central wrought iron staircase decorated with stucco. The interiors preserve typical 18th-century woodwork and decorations, making this building a remarkable example of the urban architecture of the period.
Ranked a historic monument in 2007 for its facade, roof and staircase, the hotel was later transformed to accommodate municipal services, as well as the post office and tourist office. Its location on Place du Claux, in the heart of Nant, makes it a central place of local life. The protected elements, such as the stereotomy work or wrought iron ramps, bear witness to the artisanal know-how of the Enlightenment century and the influence of military elites in the development of provincial cities.
The building, owned by the municipality since an unspecified date, opens daily from 9am to 6.30pm. Its history reflects both the prestige of its sponsor, close to the royal court, and its adaptation to modern administrative needs. The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) underline its dual role: symbol of the architectural heritage of Aveyron and active public space, anchored in the daily life of Nant.
