Origin and history

The town hall of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, built in the late 11th or early 12th century, is considered the oldest still standing in France. Originally, this Romanesque building served as a house of justice for the Viscounts of Saint Antonin, as evidenced by the sculptures of its facade evoking biblical scenes (Moses, Adam and Eve). It became a consular house in 1312, when the city's consuls purchased it as their administrative seat. The structure combines a ground floor with ogival arches, a top gallery with carved columnettes, and a floor with gemini windows, all topped by a square tower added or restored later.

The monument underwent major transformations in the 19th century under the direction of Eugene Viollet-le-Duc (1845-1851), which restored the facade, replaced the exterior staircase with a screw staircase, and added a crown inspired by military architecture to the tower. The original bronze columns, one of which disappeared in 1622 and the other during the Revolution, symbolized the judicial prestige of the building. Ranked as a Historic Monument in 1846, it now embodies both the medieval heritage of the city and the 19th century heritage interventions.

Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, a prosperous medieval city thanks to its Benedictine abbey (founded in the eighth century) and its strategic position between Quercy, Rouergue and Albigeois, was a major commercial and religious crossroads. The town hall, located on Place de la Halle, reflects this turbulent history: the city, in turn Protestant during the Wars of Religion, occupied by the English in the 14th century, and marked by the mill and tanneries industry, retained its administrative role despite the upheavals. The building, with its Romanesque decorations and redevelopments, remains a key witness to this urban evolution.

The local legend links the founding of the city to Saint Antonin, evangelizer of the Rouergue in the 5th century, whose relics, transported by a miraculous boat, were allegedly deposited at the confluence of the Aveyron and the Bonnette. This story, mixing history and mythology, strengthened the prestige of the abbey and, by extension, the consular house. Today, the city hall, although closed to the public pending a museum relocation, remains a symbol of the institutional continuity of Saint Antonin, from the feudal era to the present day.
