Origin and history

The 16th century hotel, located in Restigné in Indre-et-Loire, is a historical monument traditionally built in 1555. The main building, Renaissance-style, features a floor on the ground floor, topped by a high lighted by two finely carved gable windows. A polygonal tower, home to a stone screw staircase, flanks the south facade, while the west gable is decorated with an epi depicting a grotesque character sitting on two bulls. These architectural elements bear witness to a craftsmanship typical of the period.

In the 18th century, a wing in return for square was added south side, partially masking the original facade. This extension illustrates a stylistic evolution towards classicism, while preserving the structural integrity of the Renaissance nucleus. Only the façades and roofs of the sixteenth century, including the tower and its staircase, have been protected by the inscription to the Historical Monuments since 1962. The 18th century wing, although present, is not covered by this protection.

The monument thus embodies two distinct epochs: the Renaissance, with its carved decorations and its iconic tower, and the eighteenth century, marked by a more sober extension. Its present state reflects this duality, between late medieval heritage and subsequent adaptations. The location in Restigné, in the Loire Valley, is part of a territory rich in architectural heritage, where private hotels testify to the influence of local elites throughout the centuries.
