Origin and history

The Hotel de l'Officier Général des Salines, also known as the Abbaye House, is an emblematic monument of Salins-les-Bains, in the Jura department. Built during the first quarter of the 15th century, it underwent significant changes in the 17th and 18th centuries. This building reflects the historical importance of salt production in the region, a major economic activity since the Middle Ages. Its architecture thus combines medieval elements and more recent additions, typical of renovation periods.

By order of 18 October 1957, the building is now the property of the municipality of Salins-les-Bains. The protected elements include the house itself and its gate overlooking the street of the Republic. Although the sources do not specify its current use (visits, rental, accommodation), its central location, near Place des Salines, makes it a privileged witness to local urban and industrial history. The accuracy of its geographical location is estimated as fair, with an official address at 3 rue du Bourg-Dessous.

Salins-les-Bains, integrated into the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region, owes part of its heritage to the exploitation of salt, a resource that has structured economic and social life for centuries. Buildings such as the Hotel de l'Officier Général des Salines often served as residences or administrative places linked to this industry. Their preservation makes it possible to understand the social organization and hierarchies in place, where the officers responsible for the management of the saline held a key position. This monument is part of a wider network of historic sites dedicated to this iconic activity.
