Origin and history

The Hotel des Counts de Brignac, located in Montagnac in Occitanie, is a historical monument dating from the 4th quarter of the 15th century, with modifications in the 16th and 18th centuries. It represents the western part of a once larger building, served by two courtyards: a front with vestibule, a rear with twin arcade galleries. The central screw staircase, surmounted by a dovecote between two domes, serves the floors. The façade on street, initially symmetrical, was changed in the 18th century by lowering the roof.

Inside, the first floor retains a painted ceiling decorated with coats of arms, plant motifs, characters and fantastic animals, organized in metopes on the soles. Garlands decorate the mouldings, while ancient graffiti and architectural elements have been discovered. The building, classified as Historic Monument in 1988, illustrates the aristocratic civil architecture of Languedoc, combining residential and symbolic functions (arms, decorations).

The original structure probably included a large room per level, spread over three floors. The low arches of the backyard opened on galleries, typical of the mansions of the southern Renaissance. The site, located at 8 rue Lafayette, retains traces of its past use, although its GPS location is approximate (estimated at 5/10).
