Origin and history
The Boecklin Hotel in Boecklinsau is a historic monument located in the heart of Strasbourg, in 17 Place Saint-Étienne. Built in the 4th quarter of the 16th century, this building illustrates the civil architecture of the Strasbourg Renaissance. Since the 1920s, it has been known to house the Foyer de l'étudiant catholique (FEC) and a university restaurant, marking its anchor in local student life.
The hotel was classified as historic monuments by order of November 10, 1927, recognizing its heritage value. Among the notable figures related to this place are the mathematician Paul Appel, born in this house on 27 September 1855. The building, originally associated with the nobility of Lower Alsace under the Management Board, is now managed by an association and remains an active place, although its access to the public is limited to specific functions such as catering or student accommodation.
Architecturally, the hotel reflects the prestige of its former owners, Boecklinsau Boecklinsau, a noble Alsatian family. Its central location, close to the cathedral and in a historic district, highlights its importance in the Strasbourg urban landscape. Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum, Mérimée base) confirm its status as an association property and its contemporary role in university life.
