Origin and history
The Governor's Hotel, also known as the Government Hotel, is a private hotel in Chinon, Indre-et-Loire. Built mainly in the 15th and 17th centuries, it illustrates the civil architecture of these periods, with elements such as a door in full hangar, pilasters and a mascaron adorning the facade. The building was renovated in 1697, incorporating baroque elements such as a baluster staircase and stone balconies.
The interior courtyard of the hotel is surrounded by residential buildings and an arcade gallery, typical of the mansions of the time. A double wrought iron staircase leads to the first floor, connecting the wings of the house. The monument was listed as a historical monument on 12 July 1963, protecting its facades, roofs, the entrance door to the courtyard, the fence wall and the double-flyed staircase of the north wing.
The interior fittings, such as the 18th-century chimneys and the guard grid, reflect later additions. The street façade dates back to the 19th century, showing a continuous architectural evolution. Today, the Governor's Hotel remains a testimony of Chinon's urban history, mixing medieval, classical and posterior styles.
