Origin and history

The Hotel des Monnaies de Chinon is a mansion built in the 15th century, located at 20 rue du Grenier-à-Sel. This monument, which has been listed as a historical monument since 1967, is distinguished by its stone architecture, including two perpendicular buildings and a polygonal tower with a stone screw staircase. The access door to this tower is decorated with a brace with hooks and florets, typical of the Gothic style.

The building is based on cellars dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, revealing an ancient occupation of the site. Originally, he served as a currency hotel during the reign of Charles VII, demonstrating its economic and administrative importance. The interiors were redesigned in the 18th century, notably with the addition of chimneys, but the facades and roofs, as well as the spiral staircase, have remained protected since 1967.

The location of the Hôtel des Monnaies in downtown Chinon makes it a key element of the architectural heritage of the Centre-Val de Loire region. Its inscription in historical monuments underscores its heritage value, linked to its monetary history and its preserved medieval architecture.
