Origin and history

The Hotel des Postes de Chartres, built between 1923 and 1928 by architect Raoul Brandon, embodies the medieval style revisited in the 20th century. Located at the corner of Boulevard Maurice-Violette and Rue du Général-Koenig, it is distinguished by its facades richly decorated with mosaics made by Édouard Blin. These works, inspired by Byzantines, illustrate symbolic scenes such as Peace or postal activities (aircraft, truck, railway). The interior frescoes of Pierre Vaillant, representing beautiful landscapes and local monuments such as the castles of Frazé and d-Anet, were unfortunately destroyed in the 1970s.

The building, originally dedicated to postal services, was partially protected in 1994 with the inscription of its facades and roofs to historical monuments. In 2007, after a renovation led by Paul Chemetov, he was converted into a municipal media library, the Apostrophe. This transformation has preserved its external artistic heritage while adapting its interior to contemporary cultural needs. In 2016, the Ministry of Culture awarded him the "Heritage of the 20th Century", highlighting its architectural and historical importance.

The exterior mosaics, still visible, tell part of the local and technical history of the time. There are representations of employees installing telephone lines, or the coat of arms of Chartres and Paris accompanied by their Latin currencies. The main body of the building, with its sorting room and circular ramp staircase topped by an arrow, bears witness to Brandon's functional ingenuity. The original garages, on the other hand, disappeared, partially altering the initial configuration of the site.

Raoul Brandon (1878–?), an architect born in Lucé near Chartres, marked this project with its regional footprint. A student of Charles Émile Vaillant, a departmental architect, Brandon has integrated local elements such as the Beauceronne harvest scenes into interior decors. His work is part of a context of public service modernization after the First World War, where postal architecture became a symbol of technical and social progress. Today, the building combines heritage memory and cultural dynamism, embodying the transition between heritage and innovation.
