Origin and history
The Hotel des Postes in Rambouillet, located in the Yvelines, was designed in 1935 by architect Joseph Bukiet and completed in 1937. This building illustrates the "modern academicism" style of the inter-war period, combining classical rigour and innovative materials. Its reinforced concrete structure, dressed in brick and adorned with granite or marble, reflects an aesthetic research marked by careful details: central colonnade, attic in brick, salient cornice, and decorations of flammated sandstone, mosaic or glass paste.
The main façade, organized along a longitudinal axis, highlights a central forebody with a colonnade, typical of the public buildings of this period. The facades and roofs were inscribed in the Historic Monuments by order of 26 April 1999, highlighting their heritage value. The building, owned by the State, embodies both a utility function (post office) and an architectural ambition, characteristic of the public achievements of the 1930s.
The choice of materials – brick, granite, marble – and techniques (mosaics, enamels) reflects a desire for durability and elegance, while being part of the infrastructure modernization movement in France. The location of the Hotel des Postes, on the Place André-Thome-et-J.-Patenôtre, makes it a central point in the urban landscape of Rambouillet, a city marked by its historical heritage and its proximity to the State forest.
