Origin and history
The Hotel des Quatre-Saisons, located in Fréjus in the Var, is an emblematic monument of the architectural heritage of the mid-18th century. Built around 1750, it illustrates the style of the local urban houses of the period, with a first level of cut stone and floors covered with a smooth coating. Its rectangular plan, decorated with two wings advanced on the garden, and its four-span facade of segmentary bays reflect the sober elegance of this period.
The hotel was originally built for César de Suffret, lieutenant of the Admiralty of Fréjus, before being transformed into a post relay in 1809. This place marked history by the passage of illustrious figures like Napoleon I and Pope Pius VII. The richly decorated facade on the street, as well as the reliefs and chains of cut stone, testify to its past importance. Ranked Historic Monument in 1995 for its facades and roofs, it retains a representative character of the 18th century Fréjus.
Today, the Hôtel des Quatre-Saisons remains a major architectural and historical testimony of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Its state of conservation and its location in the city centre, at 75 rue du Général-de-Gaulle (formerly rue de la Gare), make it a point of interest for heritage enthusiasts. The accuracy of its location is estimated to be fair, and its protected elements have been included in the inventory since 1995.
