Origin and history

Hotel Deydé is a private hotel located in Montpellier, in the Herault department, Occitanie region. Built in the 4th quarter of the 17th century, it embodies the classical architecture of this period, with a French composition including a garden. The building was reportedly erected in 1697 according to the plans of architect Augustin Charles d'Aviler, on the site of two pre-existing houses. Its portal, dated 1727, marks the entrance of a biased passage leading to a courtyard adorned with a margin fountain framed with pilasters.

The construction of the hotel was initiated for Joseph Deydé's widow in 1644, then completed in 1692 for Joseph Deydé, his grandson, who was then a member of the Court of Auditors. The courtyard façades, structured in two floors on the ground floor, have grounded windows and marked horizontal separations. The interior staircase, accessible by a double door, rests on arches and pillars, with ramping balusters of square section. The ensemble reflects the social prestige of its sponsors.

The Deydé Hotel is partially protected as historical monuments: the facade and roof on the square were inscribed on 16 September 1943, while the facades and roofs on the courtyard, as well as the large interior staircase, were inscribed on 21 December 1984. These protections underline the heritage value of this building, a witness to Montpellierian urban planning of the 17th and 18th centuries.

The exact address of the hotel, according to the Mérimée base, is 8 rue du Cannau in Montpellier. Although its GPS location is approximate (noted 5/10 in precision), it remains a remarkable example of modern-day civil architecture, combining residential function and social representation. Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its importance in local heritage.
