Origin and history

The Hôtel-Dieu de Bayeux, founded in the 11th century under the direction of Saint Augustine's regular Chanoines, sees its first buildings built in the 13th century. The Augustine community settled there in the 17th century, with the arrival of the nuns of Mercy in 1643. Between 1696 and 1702, Bishop François de Nesmond supervised major works, including the reconstruction of the infirmary around 1770. The French Revolution temporarily disperses the community, which then returns.

In the 19th century, changes were made, including the reconstruction of the sick room and the transformations of the chapel. The monument is partially listed and classified as historical monuments between 1989 and 1996. The protected elements include the novitiate, the facades of the infirmary, the garden, the entrance gate, the chapel and the Augustine house.

The architecture of the Hôtel-Dieu, built in stone, reflects its evolution throughout the centuries, with traces of the thirteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The site, located at 13bis rue de Nesmond, remains an important testimony to Bayeux' hospital and religious history. The Augustines, including Blessed Catherine de Longpré, have marked her history, including their role in managing and expanding the institution.

Today, the Hôtel-Dieu de Bayeux is owned by a communal public establishment. Its architectural and historical heritage, combined with its successive protections, makes it an emblematic monument of Calvados and Normandy.
