Origin and history
The Hôtel-Dieu d'Etampes, located at 37 rue de la République, is a hospital building dating back to 1195, with a congregation of Augustinian nuns established at the end of the 16th century. The dormitory, built in 1559, was transformed into a church around 1632, while the chapel of the nuns was added in 1719. The wings of medicine and community, built in 1632 and 1705 respectively, were enlarged and raised in the 18th century by architects C.F. Viel and P. Jollivet. The hospice was created in 1834 by architect P. Magne, and medical extensions were added in 1894 and 1898 by Anjubert.
The monument, which was closed in 1991, was restored in the early 2010s and converted into housing. The buildings north and east were destroyed to give way to modern buildings and pedestrian paths, while the buildings adjacent to Baugin Street, visible from the Collégiale Notre-Dame-du-Fort, were preserved. Several elements, including the gate to the Rue de la République, the facades, the chapel, and interior decorations, have been listed as historical monuments since 1988.
The Hôtel-Dieu illustrates the architectural and medical evolution of French hospitals, moving from a medieval religious institution to a modern hospital, before its contemporary conversion into a home. Its history reflects the urban and social transformations of Etampes, marked by phases of construction, extension and adaptation to sanitary and residential needs.
