Origin and history

The Hôtel-Dieu de Sarlat-la-Canéda was built in 1632 by Jean de Bars, a great archdeacon, on the site of an old mill belonging to an abbey. This building, designed to accommodate the sick and the poor, operated until the French Revolution. During this period it was transformed into a public bath, marking a radical change in its initial use. Originally, the building was linked to other buildings on its southern façade, but the street piercing in 1836 l'isola, forming a separate urban island.

The architecture of the Hotel-Dieu is characterized by two floors on the ground floor, organized around a rectangular inner courtyard closed by a wrought iron gate. The main entrance, located in the east, is framed by two corbelled capital pilasters, surmounted by a low arch and a table originally intended for inscription or motif. A very overflowing cornice, supported by triglyphs, crowns the whole. Inside, the ground floor is fully vaulted and compartmented by low arches, while a four-way scald and a statue niche under a shell dais enrich the facades.

The Hôtel-Dieu has been a part of the Historical Monuments since 1977 and protects its facades, roofs, wrought iron ramp staircase and vaulted rooms on the ground floor. Its historic address, 2 rue du Mining, and its Insee code (24520) place it precisely in the Dordogne department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Although its GPS location is considered very satisfactory (note 8/10), its history reflects the social and urban changes of Sarlat, from the Ancien Régime to the contemporary era.
