Origin and history
The hotel of the Military Governor of Lyon, originally conceived as a private hotel, was built in 1859 by the architect Jean-Marie-Anselme Lablatinière for the Italian banker Jonas Vitta. This monument perfectly illustrates the eclectic architecture and the splendor of the bourgeois residences of the Second Empire in Lyon. Its location is part of the urbanization resulting from the Morand plan, marking a period of major transformation for the city.
Originally, the building housed stables in the backyard, now converted into garages and quarters for military personnel. The hotel became municipal property and was occupied by the military governor from 1913. Since then, it has been maintained by the Ministry of Defence, with official spaces on the ground floor and residences for the Governor and his chief of staff upstairs.
Ranked a historic monument in 2015 (after an inscription in 2014), the hotel is distinguished by the quality of its interior decoration and architecture, reflecting the prestige of its first owners, the Vitta Barons. Its official address, 38-38bis avenue du Maréchal-Foch, makes it a heritage landmark of the 6th arrondissement of Lyon, mixing military history and bourgeois heritage.
The protection of the monument covers the entire building, including the old stables and private apartments, emphasizing its architectural and historical importance.
