Origin and history

The Hotel Donadei de Campredon is a private hotel built in 1746 at the request of Charles Joseph de Campredon, in the town of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, in Provence. Its architecture, designed by Esprit-Joseph Brun, is distinguished by a plan in the shape of L, with two interior facades bordering a garden decorated with three fountains, made by Jean-Ange Brun, brother of Esprit-Joseph. The vestibule and its staircase, with a wrought iron ramp, are remarkable elements of this building.

In 1865, the hotel was sold by the Marquis de Lespine, descendant of Campredon, to the sisters of Saint Charles de Lyon. More than a century later, in 1978, the municipality of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue became its owner. Since 2003, after renovation, the hotel has housed a 400 m2 contemporary art centre, including eight exhibition rooms, an auditorium, and a bookshop. The third floor is dedicated to René Char, with a reconstitution of his office and a permanent exhibition on his work.

Ranked a historic monument since 2 March 1979, the Hotel Donadei de Campredon protects its facades, roofs, vestibule, staircase, and three niches of the garden. Its official address is the 20 rue du Droit-Tallet, in the department of Vaucluse, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. The building thus combines 18th century architectural heritage and contemporary cultural vocation.
