Origin and history

The Hotel du Boeuf Noir is a historic monument located at 22 Grand-Rue in Saverne, in the Lower Rhine (Great East region). Built in 1662 as a bourgeois house, it was transformed into a hotel under the sign of the Black Eagle from 1669, as evidenced by a date worn on the building. This change of vocation reflects the growing importance of trade routes in Alsace in the 17th century, where Saverne played a role as a crossroads between Strasbourg and the Vosges.

In the 19th century, the building was renovated and renamed the Black Beef, a name it still retains today. At the end of the same century, he underwent major transformations, including an increase in his structure. These changes illustrate the frequent architectural adaptations of Alsatian urban buildings to changing needs, including the growth of tourism and economic exchanges.

The Hotel du Boeuf Noir was included in the inventory of historical monuments by order of 12 October 1929, a recognition that specifically protects its facade with oriel and corner statuette, as well as its roofs. This protection highlights architectural elements typical of the late Renaissance in Alsace, such as corbellations and carved decorations, often associated with Germanic influence in the region.

Today, the building remains a testament to Saverne's urban evolution, combining residential, commercial and hotel functions. Its location on the Grand-Rue, the main street of the city, highlights its historical role in local social and economic life. Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) confirm its protected heritage status, although details of its current use (visits, accommodation) remain partial.
