Origin and history

The Hôtel du Bois de Fosseux is a monument located in Arras, in the Pas-de-Calais department, in the Hauts-de-France region. Built during the second quarter of the eighteenth century, this building is a typical example of the civil architecture of this period. It has been a part of the Historic Monuments since 1946, especially for its portal and façade on the courtyard of honour, emblematic elements of its style.

In the 18th century, Arras was a dynamic city, marked by a rising bourgeoisie and a rich cultural life. Private hotels, such as the Bois de Fosseux, reflected the social status of their owners and often served as a framework for social or administrative activities. These buildings, by their careful architecture, testify to the importance attached to aesthetics and comfort in the affluent environments of the time.

Their location in the city centre, as is the case for this hotel located rue du Marché-au-Filet, strengthened their role in urban life.
