Origin and history
The Bouexic de Pinieuc hotel is a private hotel located in the centre of Rennes, in Ille-et-Vilaine. Built in the 2nd quarter of the 17th century, in 1631, it is distinguished by its Baroque architecture, rare in Brittany, and its Italian influence. Its main façade overlooks the rue de la Monnaie, facing the cathedral, while its rear façade follows the route of the old ramparts of Rennes. The building consists of a central body flanked by two asymmetric pavilions, with a granite ground floor and white stone floors.
The hotel has remarkable architectural elements: a curved door framed with pilasters, windows on the first floor decorated with triangular frontons and bosses, and windows on the second floor crowned with triangular or rounded frontons decorated with foliage. A frieze carved from animal heads, grape clusters and floral motifs crown the ensemble, surmounted by a cornice with modillons. This monument illustrates the introduction of the Baroque style in Brittany, marked by Italian contributions.
Ranked a Historic Monument since July 11, 1942, the Hotel du Bouexic de Pinieuc is associated with other Rennes heritage features, such as the Mordelaise Gate, the Chesne Tower and the remains of the city's fortified enclosure. Its location, between rue des Portes Mordelaises and rue de la Monnaie, makes it a witness to the historic urban planning of Rennes, mixing aristocratic habitat and medieval defenses.
The street, side and roof façades are protected by the 1942 registration order. Although the practical information on its visit or current use is limited, its architecture and history make it a significant example of the 17th century Rennes heritage, reflecting the cultural and artistic exchanges of the period.
