Origin and history

The Hôtel du Commerce de Louhans is an emblematic monument located in the municipality of Louhans, Saône-et-Loire, in the heart of the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. Built in the 16th century, this building is distinguished by its Renaissance architecture, marked by interior decorative elements such as woodwork and remarkable ceilings. It embodies the architectural heritage of the Louhanese Bresse, a region known for its commercial and artisanal history.

The Hotel du Commerce was recognized for its heritage value from the early twentieth century. It was listed as historic monuments on 18 January 1928, covering the entire building, including its ceilings and woodwork. This protection was reinforced by a classification on 13 March 1934, specifically concerning the facade of the ground floor and first floor, as well as two old ceilings, one of which extends under the arcades of the Grande-Rue. These measures underline the historic and artistic importance of the building.

Protected elements include major architectural details, such as ground floor and first floor ceilings, as well as interior woodwork. The official address registered at the Mérimée base (10 Grande Rue, 71,500 Louhans) confirms its anchoring in the city centre, a place probably driven by commercial activities since its construction. Today, although information on its current use (visits, rentals, accommodation) is missing from the sources, its status as a historical monument makes it a privileged witness to local history.

The Bresse region, to which Louhans belongs, was in the 16th century a dynamic agricultural, commercial and artisanal area. Buildings such as the Hôtel du Commerce often served as meeting places for merchants, artisans and travellers, reflecting the economic prosperity of the time. Their preservation allows today to understand the lifestyles, exchanges and social organization of Burgundy-Franche-Comté in the Renaissance.
