Origin and history

The Dublan Hotel, also known as the Journu Hotel, is an 18th-century mansion located at 55 cours Georges-Clemenceau in Bordeaux. Built between 1770 and 1780, it is considered an architectural gem of the city, with a rare inner courtyard in the shape of a horse iron and a facade decorated with frontons and balustrades. The building was listed as a historic monument in 1935 and was fully protected by an order in 2020.

The hotel was commissioned by Pierre Dublan, prosecutor at Guyenne's finance office, and designed by architect François Lhote. Delivered in 1778 for 74,000 pounds, it was sold six years later to Martial de Verthamon and his wife. After several changes of owners, including the merchant Desfournel, which expanded in 1807, he was acquired in 1824 by Bernard Auguste Journu, earning him his second name. A fire in the early 20th century required restoration in accordance with its original style.

The hotel's architecture is marked by three levels, including a "beautiful floor" with windows decorated with high frontons. Victor Louis, a famous Bordeaux architect, described him as "Beautiful of Bordeaux". The cornice, surmounted by a balustrade, conceals the roof, adding to the elegance of the whole. The inner courtyard, by horse iron, is a rare example in the region.

A private property, the hotel is today a testament to the civil architecture of the eighteenth century in Bordeaux. Its inscription in the historic monuments in 1935 and its full protection in 2020 underscore its heritage importance. The protected elements include the entire building, as delimited on the cadastral plane of Parcel No. 142.

The Dublan Hotel illustrates the fascist of Bordeaux bourgeois residences of the Louis XVI period. Its history reflects the social and economic changes of Bordeaux, then a prosperous port thanks to maritime trade. Successive owners, often linked to finance or trading, have helped shape its architectural and historical identity.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as an iconic monument. The photographs and descriptions available online, such as those of Sylvain Machecert under Creative Commons license, allow you to appreciate its architectural details, such as the porch, the front door and the inner courtyard.
