Origin and history

Hotel Dumas de Paulard, located in the former town of Montferrand (now integrated with Clermont-Ferrand), dates from the 16th century. This historic monument is distinguished by architectural elements typical of the Renaissance, like a staircase door decorated with a bent shield supported by two loves. This shield, with an angel-shaped crowned helmet, carries the guns of the Dumas de Paulard: a high cross accompanied by two stars. These heraldic details attest to the hotel's membership in this local noble family.

In the inner courtyard, a window with sills and crumbs has finely worked mouldings, while a gallery on the first floor houses a round-bosse sculpture by Saint Christophe, integrated into a central day. These decorative elements, combined with the general structure of the building, illustrate the architectural refinement of the period. The hotel was listed as a Historic Monument by order of 12 November 1926, recognizing its heritage value.

The hotel's historic address, initially 25 rue de la Fontaine (now Jules-Guesde Street), reflects the urban transformations of Clermont-Ferrand. Although its exact location is estimated as fair (note 5/10) in the current databases, its importance lies in its testimony to the social and architectural history of Montferrand, an ancient medieval city merged with Clermont in the 17th century. The weapons of the Dumas de Paulard, still visible, recall the role of aristocratic families in the urban development of the region.
