Origin and history

The hotel located at the 37 aisle de la Robertsau in Strasbourg is a historic monument registered since 1986. This building, built in 1901 in a neo-baroque style, was commissioned by Dr. Laqueur. The architect Issleiber, assisted by the entrepreneur Kossler, provided the design. The building incorporates remarkable decorative elements, such as japonizing paintings made in 1920 by François Barette in the stairwell, as well as an 18th-century well, formerly located Place Kléber (then Place d'Armes), designed by architect Jacques-François Blondel in 1764.

The well, with its wrought iron superstructure, is one of the four that originally adorned the Place d'Armes, redesigned by Blondel. The hotel's protected elements include the entrance hall, the first floor landing with its murals, the main staircase and ironwork, and three ground floor lounges. These salons retain 18th-century wooden decorations and sculptures, reused during construction. The ensemble illustrates a fusion between ancient heritage and early twentieth century artistic influences.

The designation of historic monuments, effective since 30 December 1986, covers both the decorated interior and the historic well. The latter, although inappropriate, remains a testimony of the Strasbourg urban planning of the 18th century. The hotel, with its architecture and decors, reflects the stylistic eclecticism of its time, mixing classical heritage and Art Nouveau modernity. Its state of conservation and its protections make it a significant example of the Alsatian heritage.
