Origin and history

Hotel Estienne de la Rivière is a private hotel located in Limoges, in the Haute-Vienne department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Built in the early 19th century, it replaces an old 17th century building, probably the Hôtel des Trésoriers de France, partially demolished in 1782. The new building, completed in 1812, is attributed to the Estienne de la Rivière family and is distinguished by its square architecture, with two buildings.

The hotel's interior decor, consisting of woodwork and stucco, is particularly remarkable. Several elements, including the facades, roofs, the entrance pavilion and the gate, as well as the interior decorations (large room on the ground floor, living room and bedroom on the first floor), were inscribed in the historic monuments by order of 15 April 1988. These protections underline the heritage value of this place, now owned by an association.

The hotel illustrates the bourgeois architecture of the early nineteenth century, a period marked by the reconstruction and beautification of French cities after revolutionary upheavals. In Limoges, this period also corresponds to an economic boom linked to porcelain, a major activity of the region. The hotel, by its location in the city centre (place du Présidial) and its history, bears witness to the influence of local elites in the urban planning of the time.
