Origin and history
The Hotel de Bagnols-sur-Cèze is a civil building built during the second half of the seventeenth century, typical of the aristocratic or bourgeois residential architecture of this period. Its large staircase, dated precisely from 1667, is one of the most remarkable elements of the building, bearing witness to the craftsmanship and aesthetic codes of the time. The staircase, as well as the courtyard facades and the stairwell with its galleries, were protected by decree of 25 June 2002, highlighting their exceptional heritage value.
The monument is part of the urban fabric of Bagnols-sur-Cèze, the city of Gard en Occitanie, an area marked in the seventeenth century by economic dynamism linked to trade, agriculture (wine, olive trees) and a rising bourgeoisie. Private hotels of that time often reflect the social status of their owners, serving as both a residence and a place of representation. Their location in the city centre, like the street of the Republic, reinforces their role in public life and local exchanges.
The protected elements include, in addition to the stairway, the courtyard facades with their roofs, the courtyard floor, as well as the entrance passage and the street door, detailed in the cadastre under reference BE 301. These protections aim to preserve the architectural and historical integrity of the site, while allowing for possible tourist or cultural enhancement. No information is available about its current access (visits, rental) or its contemporary use.
