Origin and history

The Gauthiot d'Ancier hotel is a Renaissance mansion built between 1530 and 1533 in Besançon, in the historical area of La Boucle. Commanded by Simon Gauthiot d'Ancier (1490-1556), provost of Gray and co-governor of the city, he was erected on a vast plot of land acquired at the Holy Spirit's hospital, incorporating pre-existing medieval houses, including one with wooden strips of 13th-XIVth centuries. The construction of this building is part of an architectural renewal in Franche-Comté, marked by the transition between the late Gothic and the Humanist Renaissance.

Besançon, then under the influence of the Habsburgs, saw the emergence of urban palaces reflecting the power of the local elites, such as the Granvelle, built shortly afterwards in the same street. The original hotel, now partially preserved on 15 Great Street, included several houses, a courtyard and a garden. Only the ground floor and the first floor remain, transformed into shops (including a bookshop) after major renovations in 1980 and 1996.

The stone façade of Chailluz, decorated with arcades and door windows, illustrates this hybrid style. A notable event was the reception in 1533 of Stathouder René de Chalon, governor of the Burgundian Netherlands and member of the House of Orange-Nassau. This place symbolized the alliance between the elites and imperial power in a strategic region between France and the Empire.

The facade and roof were classified as historical monuments in 1942, followed in 1994 by the second-storey wooden span. Today, the hotel bears witness to the Renaissance bisontin heritage, while furniture attributed to Hugues Sambin, preserved at the Baron-Martin Museum in Gray, evokes its original furnishings. The building is located in a remarkable urban complex, close to the Granvelle Palace and the Temple of the Holy Spirit, a former hospital whose land allowed its construction.

Its architecture, combining local tradition and innovations, makes it a rare example of the Renaissance in Franche-Comté. The Gauthiot d'Ancier family, close to the circles of power, organized diplomatic receptions there, strengthening Besançon's role as a political crossroads between Burgundy and the Empire. The archives mention luxurious furniture, now dispersed, some of which could come from Sambin's workshop.

Excavations and dendrochronological studies have confirmed the presence of earlier medieval structures, revealing a continuous occupation of the site since the thirteenth century. These discoveries highlight the historic importance of the Grande rue, a major artery in the city since the Middle Ages. In 1996, restoration works revealed fragmentary 16th century murals, now protected.

These remains, although partially visible, offer an overview of the original interior decorations, combining geometric motifs and family emblems. The Gauthiot d'Ancier hotel thus embodies the synthesis between medieval heritage and Renaissance ambition, characteristic of the 16th century Franche-Comté. Its history reflects the political and cultural dynamics of a region at the heart of European issues.
