Origin and history
The hotel Gavinet is a private hotel built in the last quarter of the eighteenth century, located at 29 rue de la Préfecture in the area of La Boucle in Besançon. Commanded in 1777 by Sieur Gavinet, general commissioner of powders and saltpetres, it was designed by the bisontin architect Claude-Antoine Colombot. This building illustrates the Louis XVI style, with a facade rhythmic by baluster balconies and a triangular pediment above the central window.
The street of the Prefecture, where the hotel stands, was opened and batched from 1770. The building, organized between the street and the courtyard, includes a two-storey main body, a decomposed cochère entrance, and a right wing housing the honour staircase and the commons. The stables and sheds, as well as some interior decorations, were modified in the 19th century, especially during the Second Empire, where the stairwell was decorated with false marble.
The Gavinet Hotel, including its scenery and courtyard, was listed as a historical monument on 31 December 1997. The shed building, made of wood and brick, dates back to the late 19th century. This monument thus reflects an architectural and decorative evolution, combining the 18th century heritage and subsequent transformations.
The architect Claude-Antoine Colombot, a local figure, played a key role in the design of this hotel, while Sieur Gavinet, a sponsor, held an administrative role related to powders and saltpetters in the county of Burgundy. These elements underline the historical and social importance of the building in the bisontin context of the time.
