Origin and history

Hotel Girard de Vaugirard, located in Montbrison in the Loire, is a historical monument resulting from the transformation of two older houses in the late 16th century. Although restructured in the 18th and 19th centuries, it retains medieval and Renaissance architectural elements, testifying to its evolution throughout the eras. Its registration as a Historic Monument in 2016 protects the entire building as well as associated parcels (Box BK 1048, 1049).

Originally, the hotel resulted from the merger of two pre-existing buildings, reflecting the urban practices of the time when wealthy families expanded their homes by successive acquisitions. Subsequent changes, particularly in the late 18th and 19th centuries, adapted the building to changing residential needs, before it was converted into a housing building in the early 20th century.

The location of the hotel, between Rue Saint-Pierre and Rue des Clercs, highlights its anchoring in the historical fabric of Montbrison. The accuracy of its geographical location is estimated to be poor (level 5/10), but its official address (7 rue Saint-Pierre) remains documented in heritage bases such as Mérimée. Today, its status as a Historic Monument makes it a protected witness to the 15th–12th century civil architecture in the region.
