Origin and history

The Hotel Hardy, also known as the Hotel Ringues de la Troussanais, is an iconic building in Vitré, Ille-et-Vilaine (British). Located at 27 rue Notre-Dame, in the historic centre, it combines two distinct architectural periods: a Renaissance part of the early seventeenth century and an extension of the nineteenth century. This set illustrates the evolution of the styles and uses of a Breton mansion over nearly three centuries.

The oldest part, built in 1607 by Étienne Ringues, Sieur de la Troussanais, is a remarkable example of Breton Renaissance civil architecture. It consists of a square building with a stair turret and skylights decorated with circular pediments and statuettes. The stumps of chimneys, richly decorated with briquettes, bear witness to the luxury reserved for an easy bourgeoisie. In the 17th century, the hotel was occupied by the Hardy family, who gave it its present name.

In the 19th century, the hotel was enlarged and remodeled with architectural elements recovered from other demolished buildings. This period saw the addition of the fence wall of the courtyard and the gate on street, as well as the integration of carved fragments. These changes reflect the eclectic taste of the time, mixing heritage and reinterpretation. The ensemble was listed as a historical monument in 1926, and was partially classified in 1942 for its Renaissance part.

Today owned by Vitré, the Hardy Hotel retains a major heritage value. Its state of conservation and architectural details make it a privileged witness to the urban and social history of Brittany, from the 17th to the 19th century. The accuracy of its location (GPS coordinates and address) and its potential openness to the public also make it an accessible site for history and architecture lovers.
