Origin and history

The Hotel in Toulouse, built in the 16th century, is a historical monument classified for its Renaissance fireplace, dated after 1536. This architectural element is distinguished by a rich decoration: a wide cornice decorated with three medallions framing carved heads, supported by ionic and Corinthian columns. The coat of arms of capitoul Pierre Barassy, flanked by two winged female figures, dominate the whole, highlighting the prestige of this place.

The chimney, classified by decree of March 22, 1934, is the only protected element of the building. Her coat, decorated with an arch in the middle of a hanger, includes medallions and twin columns, illustrating Renaissance art. The sculpted details, such as the embossed heads and the scabs, reveal an exceptional craftsmanship for the time. The exact address, 44 rue des Couteliers, places this monument in the heart of historic Toulouse.

The Hotel, although partially documented, reflects the importance of the capitals in the governance of Toulouse of the sixteenth century. These municipal magistrates, like Pierre Barassy, marked their power with ostentatious architectural achievements. The fireplace, with its heraldic symbols and allegorical motifs, embodies this desire for social and political legitimacy through art.
