Origin and history

The Isabey Hotel is a private hotel built in 1775 by the bisontin architect Claude-Antoine Colombot for Antoine-Joseph Isabey, lawyer at the Besançon Parliament. The original project, designed by Gaspard Renaudin under the direction of Colombot, was approved in April 1774 and amended in 1775 at the request of the sponsor. The building, plan in "U", is distinguished by its pilaster-like facade and its concave-faced winter garden, added in 1862 by the then owner Brétillot family.

Ranked a historic monument since 1984, the hotel protects its facades, roofs, wrought iron stairs and six rooms on the first floor with their original décor. After belonging to local bankers in the 19th century, the building has been occupied since the middle of the 20th century by the Doubs Chamber of Crafts and Crafts. Its architecture reflects the elegance of Burgundian private hotels at the end of the Old Regime.

Located at 21 rue de la Préfecture in the Boucle district, the Isabey Hotel illustrates the bisontin urbanism of the 18th century, marked by the piercing of new streets like the present rue de la Préfecture (former rue de la Traverse). Its staircase of honour conceals a secondary staircase, while the communes in return square frame the courtyard and garden, typical of the aristocratic residences of the era.
