Origin and history

Hotel Joinville is a former hotel located in Barachois, in downtown Saint-Denis, on the island of La Réunion. Built in the 19th century, it embodies the colonial and Creole architectural heritage of this Indian Ocean island. Originally, the land belonged to Bernard Labadie in the late 1780s, who built wooden buildings for travellers.

Over the centuries, the building has undergone several transformations: it dates partly from the 18th century, was redesigned in the early 19th century, and then restored in the mid 20th century. Since 1978, it has been owned by the departmental council of La Réunion. In 1989, it was included in the additional inventory of Historic Monuments, and its facades, roof and main gate were protected by arrest in 2006.

Today, the Joinville Hotel is home to services from La Réunion Prefecture, whose headquarters are located in the neighbouring prefecture hotel. Its architecture and history make it an important witness to the heritage of Réunion, mixing European and local influences. The accuracy of its location is estimated as poor (level 5/10), and it is located at 4 rue des Messageries, according to available data.

The monument is representative of the hotels of travelers who played a central role in the social and economic life of Saint-Denis in the 18th and 19th centuries. These establishments welcomed merchants, colonial administrators and transit travellers, thus contributing to the dynamism of the city, which was the island's administrative capital. Their architecture, often made of wood, reflected local techniques adapted to tropical climate.
