Origin and history
Hotel Journu, located in the 3 course of the Red Hat in Bordeaux, is a private hotel built in 1778. It was built on the ice of Trompette Castle, an ancient fortress of the city, by architects Lhote or Durant. The building is distinguished by its ground floor surmounted by an entresol and three floors, crowned by a large entablement with balustrade. This architectural style reflects the taste of the 18th century Bordeaux elite, a period of prosperity linked to maritime and colonial commerce.
Several private hotels in Bordeaux belonged to the Journu family, including the 3 cours du Chapeau-Rouge. Other properties of this family include hotels at 73 rue de la Rousselle, 26-27 Place du Palais, 55 Cours Clemenceau (also known as the Dublan Hotel), and the Hôtel de l'Intendance (Paul-Painlevé Street). These residences bear witness to the influence and wealth of this family in the Bordeaux society of the time.
The Hotel Journu du Cours du Chapeau-Rouge has been partially protected as historical monuments since 1935. Only its façade and roof, referenced under cadastre KP 0053, were registered by ministerial decree. Today, the building belongs to a private company, and its access to the public is not specified in the available sources. Its location, although documented, remains approximate according to current geographic data.
The construction of this private hotel is part of an urban context marked by the gradual destruction of the ramparts of Bordeaux and the expansion of the city outwards. The château Trompette, whose glacis hosted the Hotel Journu, was a citadel dismantled from 1650 to give way to new neighborhoods. This monument illustrates the transformation of Bordeaux in the 18th century, marked by economic growth and modernization of its urban fabric.
