Origin and history

The Hotel Lamouroux is a historical monument located in the centre of Montpellier, in Occitanie. It is a quadrilateral courtyard, architectural type common in 18th century urban private hotels. This building illustrates the evolution of the aristocratic and bourgeois habitat of the period, marked by neat facades and internal courtyards organizing the distribution of spaces.

The building of the hotel dates back to 1721, when François Lamouroux, treasurer of the extraordinary war, acquired two plots to undertake a total reconstruction. This date is confirmed by a road clearance obtained the same year. The building has undergone repairs and modifications, especially at the level of its staircase, during the nineteenth century, reflecting the necessary adaptations to its use over the centuries.

The Hotel Lamouroux has been partially protected since 1994, with an inscription covering its facades, roofs, courtyard and large staircase. This heritage recognition underscores its architectural and historical importance in the Montpellieran landscape. The building, located at the 5 Grand'Rue Jean-Moulin, remains a testimony of urban planning and civil architecture of the modern period in Languedoc.

At the time of its construction, Montpellier was a dynamic city, marked by a bourgeoisie enriched by commerce, royal administration and intellectual activities. Private hotels, such as Lamouroux, served as both a residence and a symbol of social status for their owners, often linked to royal or local institutions. These buildings also reflected the influence of Parisian architectural models, adapted to regional specificities.
