Origin and history

The Hotel Les Roches Rouges was inaugurated in 1912 in Piana, Corsica, as part of a tourism promotion programme launched at the end of the 19th century. Built for the Société des hôtels corses, it is part of a network of circuits designed to develop the attractiveness of the island. Its location near the Calanches de Piana, a remarkable natural site, makes it a strategic place to welcome visitors.

In 1928, after its acquisition by the Société Corsotels (subsidiary of the PLM), the hotel was radically redesigned: a new restaurant room was set up, decorated with floral and fruit frescoes by Manenti d'Ajaccio. These decorations, still visible today, reflect the seaside aesthetic of the Belle Époque, with bay windows offering stunning views of the calanques.

Closed in 1965, the hotel was purchased in 1986 by Mady Dalakupeyan, a native of Piana, who restored it to the public. The venue, which has welcomed personalities such as Jean d'Ormesson or Carole Bouquet, also becomes a cinematic setting (Joueuse, 2009). Since 2019, it has been partially listed as historical monuments, especially for its interior and decorations of 1928.

The establishment illustrates the evolution of tourism in Corsica, moving from an easy clientele from the Belle Époque to a more diversified clientele. Its architecture, combining seaside elegance and landscape integration, makes it a rare testimony of the 20th century island hospitality. The painting by Adolphe Cossard, exhibited in the restaurant room, recalls the links between art and tourism at that time.

Ranked 20th century heritage and protected for its interior elements (restaurant, dining room, frescoes), the hotel remains a symbol of Corsican heritage, open seasonal. Its history reflects the economic and cultural dynamics of Corsica, between preservation and adaptation to contemporary tourist expectations.
