Origin and history
Hotel Libert is a listed historic monument located in Alençon, Normandy, close to Notre Dame Basilica. Built in 1731, it stands out for its granite architecture, with a central motif surmounted by a pediment and slits. The interior houses a library and conference room decorated with Louis XV panelling, as well as a large wooden staircase with a wrought iron ramp. The garden, classified with the hexagonal well of the sixteenth century, completes this architectural ensemble.
The facades, roofs, library, conference room, stairwell and garden (including well) were classified as historical monuments on 20 October 1947. This classification protects an exceptional architectural and decorative heritage, mixing elements from the 17th and 18th centuries. The older well bears witness to an earlier occupation of the site, while the panels and stairs illustrate the refinement of the Louis XV style.
The Libert Hotel, owned by a private company, is located at 1 rue du Swan in Alençon. Its architecture and interior decor reflect the prestige of 18th century mansions in Normandy. The monument is representative of the urban planning and the art of living of the aristocracy or the affluent bourgeoisie of that time in the region.
