Origin and history

The Hotel de Lisleferme is a private hotel built in 1781 by architect Richard-François Bonfin for Pierre-Romain Nicolas de Lisleferme, seigneur of Bosc, lawyer and president of the Bordeaux Academy. This jurisconsult, poet and art lover, belonged to a Protestant family from La Rochelle. The Louis XVI style building reflects the architectural refinement of the period, including an oval living room and a wrought iron ramp.

In 1857, the Bordeaux municipality acquired the hotel to install the museum of natural history, inaugurated in 1862 after major transformations led by architect Charles Burguet. Only the staircase ramp and the Louis XVI lounge remain from the original hotel. In 1871, three rooms on the ground floor temporarily housed the museum of prehistory and d'ethnography until their release in 1952.

Ranked a historic monument in 1935, the Hotel Lisleferme illustrates both the aristocratic heritage of the 18th century Bordeaux and its cultural re-use in the 19th century. Today, it remains an emblematic place of scientific diffusion, always dedicated to the museum of natural history.

Its inscription in historical monuments on October 8, 1935 underlines its heritage value, while its integration into the urban fabric of Bordeaux (place Bardineau) makes it a witness to the architectural and museum evolution of the city.
