Origin and history
The Mailhet de Vachères hotel is a private hotel located in the heart of Puy-en-Velay, in the Haute-Loire department. Built between the 17th and 18th centuries, it is distinguished by its architecture combining two epochs: a facade on a courtyard erected at the beginning of the 17th century, and an on-site facade added later by the Barons of Vachères. Originally, the site housed two houses gathered under a single facade to form the Colin des Roy Hotel, before being transformed by its successive owners.
The building adopts an irregular plan organized around a square courtyard, with four bodies of buildings juxtaposed. Its central staircase, in stone on the lower floors and in wood from the second level, is a notable architectural element. Supported by square pillars and curved arches, it is connected by a stone balustrade. The whole, including the courtyard and stairway, was inscribed in historic monuments by order of 30 September 1991, highlighting its heritage value.
Historical sources mention that Barons de Vachères, owners in the eighteenth century, probably commissioned the facade overlooking the square. This hotel illustrates the architectural evolution of aristocratic residences in Auvergne, combining functionality and aesthetics. Its current address, 12 rue Séguret and 1 rue des Pélerins, makes it a witness to the urban heritage of Puy-en-Velay, a city marked by its religious and medieval history.
