Origin and history
Hotel Maleteste is a private hotel located in Dijon, in the Côte-d'Or department, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Built in the mid-17th century, it was enlarged and embellished during the first half of the 18th century. This building is partially supported by remains of the Gallo-Roman Castrum Wall, reflecting the historical stratification of the site. The Maleteste family, at the origin of its construction, made it a prestigious residential place, characteristic of the Dijon civil architecture of the time.
In the 18th century, the hotel was rented to Guillaume Morizot, a lawyer, who began to work on the most important beautifications. These include the Regent woodwork of the library, as well as the refined decor of other rooms. The building consists of a house body with porch, a right wing housing the library (with remarkable woodwork), and a wing in return of square with lounges and a staircase turret facing the sixteenth century, vestige of previous buildings.
The Maleteste Hotel is protected under the title of historical monuments: the library room (forestry, panelling, fireplace) was classified on 6 April 1928, while the ramp staircase, the living room and the bedroom on the first floor (with their decorations) were inscribed on 5 August 2011. These protections highlight the heritage value of its architectural and decorative elements, reflecting the evolution of tastes between the 17th and 18th centuries.
Located at 7 Hernoux Street, the hotel illustrates the fascination of Dijon's private hotels, mixing medieval heritage (via castrum) and innovations of classical and Regency periods. Its history also reflects the social dynamics of the time, where bourgeoisie and nobility invested in urban residences to display their status. Today, there remains a major testimony of the architectural and historical heritage of Dijon.
