Origin and history

The Hotel Marchand is an iconic mansion located on Place des Vosges, in the 4th arrondissement of Paris. This monument is distinguished by its privileged location, between the hotels Dyel des Hameaux and Chabannes, on the west side of the square. Its exact address is 15 Place des Vosges and rue de Turenne, which makes it a key element of the Marais architectural heritage, the historic quarter of the capital.

The heritage value of the Marchand Hotel was officially recognized in the mid-20th century. In 1953, his staircase was inscribed as historical monuments, marking a first step in his protection. Two years later, in 1955, it was the facade, roofs and vaulted gallery overlooking the square that were classified, thus consolidating its preservation for future generations.

The Place des Vosges, on which the Marchand hotel is located, is itself a major historical site. Created in the early 17th century as Place Royale, it is one of the oldest planned squares in Paris. The surrounding private hotels, including the Marchand Hotel, illustrate the aristocratic residential architecture of this period, characterized by brick and stone facades, slate roofs and interior courtyards. These elements contribute to the aesthetic harmony of the square, classified as historical monuments since 1954.
