Origin and history

Hotel Martial de Grandseigne, located at 12 rue Pascal in Clermont-Ferrand, is a building from the middle of the seventeenth century, typical of the urban architecture of this period. It consists of several bodies of buildings organized around an inner courtyard, with a two-storey main body decorated with ironwork and large curved frontons. Access to the ramp staircase leading to the alcove lounge is via a side entrance overlooking the courtyard.

The interior decoration of the hotel was ordered by Martial de Grandseigne, king's adviser and prosecutor at the court of aides, on the occasion of his marriage. Between 1662 and 1665, the local painter François Lombard realized the painted panels of the alcove salon, in collaboration with the sculptor Huchier for woodwork. These works, inspired by a secular spirit, represent various scenes such as Samson and Dalila, Didon stabbing himself or Sainte-Madeleine myrophore, integrated in a wall decor combining panelling and paintings.

The hotel has been partially protected under the Historical Monuments since 1986: the façade and roof on Pascal Street are registered, while the former alcove room on the first floor is classified. These protections highlight the heritage value of this building, a witness to 17th century art and architecture in Auvergne.
