Origin and history

The private hotel of Clermont, built in the first half of the eighteenth century, illustrates the residential architecture of the high local notability. Built for the Tavernier de Boulogne family, influential magistrates in bailliage and control of water and forests, it is a symbol of their social status. Located on the former Place du Marché-au-Blé, almost opposite the city hall, its location reflects a desire for public affirmation in the historic heart of the city.

The building is distinguished by its structure in two bodies of parallel houses, connected by wings in return of square that define an inner courtyard. The facade on the square, adorned with a protruding forebody with pilasters and consoles, as well as skylights, concentrates most of the decor. The masonries, alternating brick and cut stone with harped chains, have preserved in part their original plaster coating. Inside, only the wrought iron ramp of the honorary staircase, a witness to the ornamental arrangements of the eighteenth century, remains today.

Ranked a Historic Monument, the hotel has been partially protected since 1998, covering the façade on the square and the corresponding roof slope. This status underscores its heritage value, both as an architectural example representative of its time and as a testimony to Clermont's urban and social history. However, the accuracy of its location remains limited (level 5/10), according to available data.
