Origin and history

The Pons-des-Ollières hotel, located in Puy-en-Velay in Haute-Loire, is a monument whose origins date back to at least the 14th century, with supposed remains of the 8th century in its basements. The latter would house an crypt and an upper room, interpreted as the remains of Saint Vital Abbey. The present building is the result of several phases of construction: a private 13th-XIVth century hotel, which remains a door and a fencing window on Rue Séguret, then a partial reconstruction in the 18th century.

In the 18th century, the façade overlooking the Registry Square was entirely redesigned in the Louis XV style, incorporating characteristic ironwork elements. A plan of 1644 attests to the existence of a central square tower, probably a stairwell. Inside, the homogeneity of woodwork, French-style ceilings, carved fireplaces and ironwork reflects this style, preserved without altering restoration. Some tiles of faience chamaïeu blue adorn chimneys, adding to the decorative richness.

The hotel has been listed as historic monuments since 16 September 1949, recognizing its heritage value. Its history thus blends various architectural strata, from medieval foundations to classical arrangements, while preserving material traces of the early abbey. Sources also mention its specific address: 2 Registry Square, in the historical centre of Puy-en-Velay.
