Origin and history
Hotel Poupardin, also known as a Gaudemaris hotel or hotel in Modena, is an emblematic building in the historic centre of Carpentras, in the Vaucluse. Formerly owned by the Modena family, it preserves 16th century facades overlooking an inner courtyard, as well as a Renaissance staircase, considered one of the most remarkable in the department. The interior design and decoration work, carried out between 1750 and 1760 by the Gaudemaris family, marked its current configuration, notably with 18th-century gypseries.
The facades, roofs, screw staircases and certain rooms on the second floor, decorated with protected decorations, were classified as Historical Monuments on 30 March 1978. The hotel thus illustrates the architectural and decorative evolution between the Middle Ages and the modern era, mixing medieval heritage and classical influences. Its exact address, 2bis rue de la Monnaie, makes it a point of major interest in the Carpentrassian heritage.
Although the sources mention an origin dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries, the most striking elements date from the 16th and 18th centuries, reflecting the successive transformations carried out by its owners. The family of Gaudemaris, Marquis de Coppola and Beaumes-de-Venise, played a key role in these developments, integrating various artistic styles that bear witness to the social and cultural importance of the building throughout the eras.
