Origin and history
Hotel Pradal is a historic monument located at 22 rue du Séminaire in Clermont-Ferrand, in the department of Puy-de-Dôme. Built between the 15th and 16th centuries, it is distinguished by its Renaissance-style entrance portal, decorated with a large shell and the weapons of Étienne Pradal. The latter, lieutenant-general of the bailage of Montferrand at the end of the 15th century, marked the history of this building by its local political and legal influence.
The front of the hotel, overlooking the Rue du Séminaire, bears traces of subsequent changes, including the closing of arcades on the ground floor and a small window. These changes reflect the architectural and functional evolution of the building over the centuries. The Armoured Portal, classified as Historic Monument by order of 24 September 1987, remains the most emblematic element of this private hotel.
Hotel Pradal illustrates the civil heritage of Clermont-Ferrand, a city marked by its medieval and reborn history. At that time, Clermont-Ferrand and Montferrand, although distinct, formed a dynamic urban hub in Auvergne, where local elites, such as Étienne Pradal, played a key role in administration and social life.
